Worried About Making That Entrepreneur Move? Discover the Five Ways That Cost You, Today!

Article posted on February 13th, 2010

Have you continued to struggle with making that move to monetizing your dream as a business owner? Perhaps you’re working the full time gig and on night and weekends you toy with your dream? Of course you know a dream is nothing to toy with!

When you think about making the decision, do any of these statements get in your way? – I’m not sure how – I’m too tired – I’m not fully committed to it – I’m afraid of what could come of it – It’s the economy, recession, depression…

As a part time solopreneur, I have to admit, these are all thoughts I’ve had and which caused me to hesitate in taking that step forward. Heck it took me a couple of years to recognize that this could be real if I stopped toying with the idea and make a decision to move forward.

You’ve hear all of the “pluses” that come from owning your own business… – freedom – more time – more money – more choice – and so on….

But even this list doesn’t always inspire action or cause you to shift the dream to reality. As we look at what it costs you, just note how interesting it is that the plus side of the equation doesn’t help us to take action. Sometimes it’s the pain that can serve as the kick in the pants!

Ok, let’s look at what it costs you to not make that move! – freedom – more time – more money – more choice

Yup, as it turns out, it’s the same and many more costs when you don’t take action to make that dream your reality. We’ll examine each so that you get the real deal.

- Freedom

If you have the desire to use your talent/expertise to help others or solve their problems and want to create a business to do so, you’re got the “bug”. Your thirst for freedom to bring this idea to market will not be easily quenched! It will cost you more in the wondering of “what might have been” if you continue to resist what’s calling you!

Your next step: Take just one step, tell someone about it. They may know someone, an opportunity or simply an easy way to make it happen. Learn more about what it will take to create a business. There are more free resources today, almost too many, to simply choose from. But choose you must and get going!

- More time

When you began your business in earnest, you will invest a lot of yourself and your time. Don’t let anyone kid you! But it’s now your time and how you use it, effectively let’s hope, is what will give you more of it!

- More money

Imagine being paid for solving someone’s problem! Sure this happens when you’re working, but when it’s your business you’re not turning over the profits to anyone but your banker! You’re also able to set your own prices and delivery methods in consideration of your clients and your profit opportunity.

Your next step: Certainly you want to add the services of financial software or a qualified bookkeeper to your team to help you manage it all. There are virtual assistants who provide that service to the coach, consultant and other business owner, as part of their business! To find one type “virtual assistant” in any search engine.

- More choices

Sure choice leads to freedom. However, resisting the move to being a solopreneur costs you in the choices you make about your life, your learning and your ultimate earning potential. Today, these areas are all within the control of an employer. They will determine your working hours, working conditions and type of work – all of which affect your life. Your ability to learn new things can be limited to what training and development they provide or the time and opportunity you’re given to do so. And finally, unless you’re in the top tier of your company, your earning potential will be limited. Even today, with the bonuses some companies want to give in the US, even those are being challenged, thus capping the salaries of some executives.

Your next step: Recognize that you have a choice to take the passion that burns within and make a choice…either fan the flames or use the extinguisher. No matter what…stop the pain today!

We’ve examined the flip side of the good stuff that can happen when you pursue being an entrepreneur or solopreneur. But there is one I cannot leave off the table.

And that is your Well Being.

You’ve heard the stories and the warnings about getting to the end of your life and regretting what you didn’t do, not what you did. Your dream was given to you because you were ready for it. And if it’s still with you, it’s for a simple reason. You’re meant for it.

Not doing so, my friend, is the BIGGEST cost – not just to being a solopreneur, but in using the gifts and talents you were given. And today, you can begin with small steps while working. That removes a lot of excuses, right?
